Kolar was the ancient Kuvalaala, the first captial of the Gangas. The name Kuvalaala is found in inscriptions from 5th century AD and later periods. The region is called K0valala, Kuvalala, Kolaala, KolaHara in subsequent inscriptions. ‘Kuval’ is red lotus (naidile) and ‘Ala’ is banyan tree. The name appears to have originated from the lotus pond with a banyan tree on its bank. The paper traces the history of Kolar under the Gangas, Cholas, Hoysala, Vijayanagara rulers, Marathas, Mughals, Haider and Tipu and also discusses its monuments like the ancient Kolaramma temple and others. It is a survey of the history of Kolar.
