Several sculptors were involved in building temples and some of them were composers, writers who helped in bringing out the stone epigraphs in the premises of temples. The sculptors distributed the work among themselves. The Virupaksha and Papanatha temples of Pattadakal are the typical examples for work distribution among the sculptors where work was distributed based on the ‘direction’. This can be substantiated with examples from Bagali, Javagal, Harnahalli, Nuggehalli temples, where the sculptors were given the work in particular parts of the temple. A close study of this, throws a limelight on the responsibility and perfection attained by sculptors in their field, as described by author.
