    In this detailed article, author has listed all the temples in the district that have inscriptions. He has also given the  details of some of the important inscriptions belonging to various dynasties that ruled the region.

    Chitradurga district has more than 100 temples with inscriptions. They have been constructed and renovated by various dynasties like Nolamba, Rashtrakuta, Chalukyas,  Hoysala and Vijayanagara. Majority of the inscriptions available in the district belong to Vijayanagara period and Palegars. 

    The paper mentions the following temples.

    Temples which belong to the early era (before 10th century AD ):

    851 AD – Madhure Shaiva temple
    961 AD – Rameshwara temple on Jatinga hill
    964 AD – Chikkandavadi Maheshwara temple
    968 AD – Kyasapura Kalleshwara temple
    969 AD – Gunderi Chennakeshava temple

    Some important temples of Kalyana Chalukyas in the district include:

    Hirebennur Rameshwara temple
    Bagenahaal Brahmeshwara temple
    Parashurampura Channa Keshava temple
    Sidlayyana Kote Brahmeshwara temple
    Gunganuru Kumbeshwara temple
    Obalapura Rameshwara temple
    Chitraduga Fort Hidambeshwara, Sampige Siddeshwara

    Some temples of Chalukya’s have been renovated by Hoysala kings and appear to be Hoysala temples (11-13 century AD):

    Brahmagiri Trishankeshwara temple
    Heggere Kalleshwara temple
    Gopalakrishna temple and Phalguneshwara temple inside Chitraduga Fort
    Holalkere Shivalaya
    Kogunde Baacheshwara
    Nirgunda Kalleshwara, Malleshwara, Siddeshwara temples

    The district has few temples constructed during Hoysala period (11-13 century AD) , important among them are: 

    Heggere Santhinatheshwara
    Bevinahalli Basadi
    Front Navaranga of Nirgunda Siddeshwara temple
    Front Navaranga of Phalguneshwra temple, Chitradurga
    Hidambeshwara temple
    Bebalanatha temple
    Heggere Kalleshwara temple

    Temples which were renovated by Vijayanagara rulers  (14-16 century AD) include:

    Chikkapura Siddanatha temple
    Parashurampura Garuda and Hanumantha temples
    Ramagiri Rameshwara and Veerabhadreshwara temple
    Somerahalli Someshwara temple
    Godabanaalu Kallinatha temple
    Malenahalli Ranganatha temple
    Hireguntanooru Vinayaka temple
    Kamasamudra Veerabhadra temple
    Dummi Veerabhadra temple
    Gunderi Veerabhadra temple
    Devasamudra Vittala temple
    Hiriyur Theru Malleshwara
    Holalkere Gopalakrishna temple
    Kalkere Chowdeshwari temple
    Sampige Siddeshwara, Hidambeshwara temple in the fort

    Some important temples which were constructed by the famous Chitradurga Palegars (16 – 18 century AD)  include:

    Chitradurga Channakeshava, Venkataramana, Uchhangi Ellamma (Uthsavamba) temples
    Horakere Devapura Sri Ranganatha temple

    Hulluru Veerabhadra
