In this article, the author, in light of various inscriptions, tries to explain the origin of the name – Haaveri. Inscriptions from 10th century to 13th century state the name as, Haavariyuru, Paavari, Haaveri, Haahari, Havari, Haaveri. The earliest reference to the name Haaveri is in the inscription of 960 AD. The mythological story of Nala Chakravarthi constructing a huge lake (Heggeri) near Haveri is mentioned in few of the inscriptions available in the town.
